HOUSTON – Latinos/as (also known as “Latinxs” or “Latin@s” to include both sexes) have a long and rich history of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender (LGBT) activism and Orugullo Houston will focus on putting a spotlight on persons from the past and present. Early activist and leaders include José Julio Sarria, the first openly gay candidate for public office and Sylvia Rivera, a transgender rights activist who started the Stonewall Rebellion. Today we have the first openly transgender person to work in the White House, Raffi Freedman-Gurspan.

“Latinos and Latinas have been under-represented in the LGBT community.” says Cristina Martinez, the originations president. “Houston as the fourth largest city is a multicultural and international city and with in the cities LGBT community, Latinos make up the majority of it’s population.” Data from the Williams Institute reveals there are approximately 1.4 million LGBT Latin@ adults currently living in the United States. Of the 146,000 Latin@ same-sex households in the U.S., 29.1 percent are raising children.

The goal of Orgullo Houston is to hold a festival in October 2017 in Downtown, and after a few year develop in to a full festival and parade. This year Orgullo Houston will host it’s first of many kick-off events starting Friday, October 21, 2016 at Neon Boots Dancehall and Saloon.

Friday’s event will include cultural dancers and music, food and small fundrasiers; including a silent auction and “50/50 raffle” at the event.
